Congratulations to Caroline Criado-Perez and everyone else involved in the #Banknotes campaign that kicked off at Cybher this year. It’s victory all round as the Bank of England today announced that Jane Austen will be the face of the next £10 bank note.
Jane Austen (1775 to 1817), is one of the UK’s most celebrated writers. Her first novel Sense and Sensibility was published in 1811, followed by Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey.
Thank you to everyone who tweeted, blogged and signed the petition, you’ve changed history today and shown what can be achieved when we pull together. The new £10 note won’t be introduced until 2017, which means that there will still be a gap of about a year without a woman on a bank note, though if you search, you may still find the odd Elizabeth Fry £5 still in circulation.
