Twitter lets you DM people who don’t follow you

I’ve aways thought that one of Twitter‘s best features is the inability to DM people who don’t follow you. Well it looks like that’s set to change. There’s been rumours for some time  but it was reported last night that more users noticed a change in their account settings, that let you opt in to receiving DM’s from anyone following you – even if you aren’t following them back.

It’s unclear at this stage if this it’s being rolled out across the whole of Twitter, but we’ll keep you posted.

It is a opt in service, so there’s no need to worry about a sudden influx of unwanted personal approaches. To check if you already have the option, log into your account via, go to Twitter settings and click on account. If it’s already activated on your account you will see the following.

Twitter DM people not following you

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this, is it something that you will use? Do you think it’s a good thing, or not?

  1. I think it’s frippin’ brilliant!
No more “can you follow me so I can DM you” conversations which are, quite frankly, embarassing and attention seeking.

  2. Hmmm I’m not sure about this and I’m definitely glad that there will be the choice to opt in or out. I quite like having some control over who DMs me as silly as it might sound.
